Walter Winchell was a major American broadcast journalist and gossip columnist. He lived from 1899 to 1973. He was best known for his "Walter Winchell Show," a program that aired from 1932 to 1956 on CBS radio and from 1950 to 1959 on television. In 1950, Winchell was hired by television network CBS to host the weekday morning television show "Walter Winchell Show"
The show ran until 1956, for a total of nine years. In 1957, he challenged a panel of four celebrities on the "Walter Winchell Show" to decide the outcome of each week's horse races in a "Beat the Bookie" contest. He also served as a war correspondent covering World War II, and hosted the popular radio series, "Hollywood A to Z".
